Early Career Recommendations for the Equitable Growth of a Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Sector

Kitch et al (2025)

Recognising marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR)'s potential to address climate change, this perspective paper by early career ocean professionals (ECOPs) addresses the growing sector of mCDR and highlights the need for its equitable and sustainable development. They emphasise the crucial role ECOPs can play in shaping this sector, given their interdisciplinary training and awareness of global inequities. The paper discusses the current scale of mCDR, emphasising the gap between needed durable carbon removal capacity and current efforts. It stresses the importance of centering equity and justice in mCDR projects, highlighting the potential for exacerbating existing inequalities if local communities and traditional knowledge are not incorporated. Finally, the authors offer recommendations for capacity building, including cross-disciplinary training, university hubs, and mentorship programs, to empower ECOPs and ensure the responsible growth of the mCDR sector. They advocate for increased funding, equitable access to training, and the development of robust regulatory frameworks to guide mCDR research and deployment.
