Igniting Progress: Results from the FLARE Workshop

Fire science Learning AcRoss the Earth System (FLARE) Working Group (2024)

SOLAS Early Career Scientists have helped develop a white paper on the holistic role played by fire in the Earth System. The paper, released on 5 July 2024, is the result of the Fire science Learning AcRoss the Earth System (FLARE) workshop organised by Douglas Hamilton, Morgane Perron, and Joan Llort. The workshop, funded via the European Space Agency (ESA)-Future Earth joint program, was inspired by recent SOLAS-relevant science linking fires to ocean biogeochemistry and carbon sequestration and the growing concern on how more intense and frequent fire occurrences will impact the planet's future health – including the ocean. The role of fire in the global carbon cycle was highlighted as a priority challenge to be addressed holistically in order to better understand fire impacts on the Earth System, carbon cycle, and society.
