Third revision of the global surface seawater dimethyl sulfide climatology (DMS-Rev3)
The third climatological estimation of sea-surface dimethyl sulphide (DMS) concentrations based on in-situ measurements, the ‘DMS-Rev3’, was created. The update includes a larger input dataset and an upgraded processing algorithm. The usage of monthly dynamic biogeochemical provinces and DMS variability length scales reduced the patchiness observed in mean surface concentrations previously seen in the older climatologies. The DMS-Rev3 provides more realistic monthly estimates of DMS, with the global annual mean of 2.26 nM (2.39 nM without considering seasonal sea-ice in the polar region) and a global sea-to-air flux of DMS of ~27.1 TgS yr-1, i.e., about 4% lower than the previous L11 climatology. Significant regional differences compared to the past climatologies of seawater DMS and DMS flux distribution are observed in high concentration regions such as the polar oceans. However, oceanic regions under-sampled in the past also show substantial differences. This work has directly resulted from the SOLAS-facilitated meeting and interactions.
