Thriving Through Synergy: Fostering a SOLAS Science Community Built on Equity, International Connections, and the Integration of Early Career Scientists
Advancing ocean-atmosphere sciences requires overcoming two fundamental challenges: fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and bridging international disparities in scientific capacity and resources. Since 2004, SOLAS has addressed these issues by building a global interdisciplinary scientific community through flagship activities like its Open Science Conferences and Summer Schools. As featured in Oceanography's Special Issue on Capacity Sharing, the SOLAS team outlines how its next Science Plan, SOLAS 3.0 (2026–2035), will build on this legacy. The new strategy further prioritises diversity, equity, and inclusion through new initiatives, including a mentorship program, skill enhancement workshops, and a network of observation and training centers. By learning from past successes, SOLAS 3.0 aims to inspire researchers and the next generation of scientists around the world to tackle complex societal challenges in a truly global and transdisciplinary way.
